Department Overview
This is an IBEW Local 1245-represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This position is subject to collective bargaining.
This position is located at the Helms hydroelectric facility about two hours northeast of Fresno in a remote area of the Sierra Nevada. Work environment may include varying temperatures and weather conditions. Residency onsite is not required, and no housing accommodations for employees or their dependents will be available. Commuting in adverse weather conditions, including snow and ice, is likely.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will perform kitchen duties at a remote worksite preparing and cooking food for guests lodging in the onsite dormitories and guest houses and working at Helms . The cook will set up and restock kitchen and lunch assembly stations, transport food to dining area, serve food, and clean and maintain work areas and dining rooms. This person will be working indoors in low-rise buildings with basic heating and air conditioning and will need to walk to and from buildings across uneven ground, carpeted flooring, non-carpeted linoleum, wood, gravel, and dirt in all weather conditions. This position is physical in nature and may include lifting, crawling, crouching, grasping, carrying, kneeling, ability to walk for long distances and the ability to use upper extremities including your lower back.Cooks must be able to work well with others, use good judgment to make decisions, and take directions from others.
This position is intermittent/part-time structured as a 5-8 work schedule which varies based on the work and number of guests within camp. A 40-plus hour workweek may be scheduled for weeks or months at a time followed by weeks or months of less than 16-hour workweeks. Typical work hours scheduled range between 0300 2000. Working weekends and holidays should be expected. Split shifts are not common but may be required. Both pre-arranged overtime and emergency overtime should be expected.
This position may work alone or alongside other cooks or Housekeepers acting as kitchen assistants.
Note: This job does not include health benefits until employee has attained regular status. Intermittent employees may attain regular status upon the completion of six months of continuous service. Continuous service is defined as being uninterrupted by (1) discharge, (2) resignation, or (3) absence for more than a cumulative total of 30 days due to (i) layoff, (ii) sickness or industrial disability, or (iii) other causes. If an employee is off for more than 30 days during a sixmonth period, a new sixmonth qualifying period will begin upon return to work.
Responsibilities:
Develop nourishing menus; ensure meals well balanced and alter menu to meet special dietary needs; determine menu and collect food from storage areas; prepare, cut, mix, and cook a wide variety of foods; measure, weigh, and check temperatures to ensure proper cooking/safety of food; operate kitchen equipment including stove, grill, toaster, microwave, convection and conventional ovens, meat slicer, refrigerator/freezer, and other associated equipment. Assist in the kitchen and dining room with serving food and general cleanup.
Clean and sanitize food preparation areas and equipment; wash dishes and cooking pans; wipe down dining areas, surfaces, and fixtures; sweep and mop floor surfaces; operate dishwashing equipment; vacuum carpet.
Use cart or carry food by hand from storage and kitchen areas; receive and place food orders in storage; serve food to dining area; replenish/remove food vessels to be processed; remove trash containers and place them in designated areas.
Use computer to order supplies/food and research menus; maintain order lists daily; uses phone and computer (email) to communicate and schedule meals/tasks; use Internet applications to monitor camp activity to forecast quantity of meals.
Maintain adequate supplies of food to be cooked; check quality of fresh foods to determine expiration date; dispose of expired foods.
Attend and participate in meetings such as general staff, safety, and departmental; participate in trainings in person and online as needed.
Travel between different company facilities on company business using personal vehicle (with mileage reimbursement) or company-provided vehicle (when available).
Complete deep cleaning projects within the kitchen and dining area; clean equipment; use brooms, mops, disinfect and scrub floors, tables, and equipment; use chemicals and cleaning tools to scrape/scrub and detail kitchen and dining room areas.
Provide guidance and mentorship to other kitchen personnel; assist with orientation to kitchen and storage areas; coordinate kitchen activities and assist staff as needed.
Answer phone; enter data in computer system, handle paperwork; perform general filing tasks; operate copier to transmit and duplicate documents.
Use company-provided P-Card to order supplies and submit associated expense reports in a timely and thorough manner.
Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must possess a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience
Must possess a valid California Driver's License or equivalent
Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Must be able to lift 50 pounds a minimum of one time a day
Must be able to respond to an on-call work request quickly and safely
Must carry chains in personal vehicles November 1 May 1
Desired Requirements:
Cook OR Housekeeping experience at a PG&E facility
1 year of experience in foodservice/hospitality industry and/or basic cooking
ServSafe Manager certificate or equivalent within 30 days of hire
Experience with MS Teams application
Experience with Sirvoy reservation system
Experience with Concur expense management software
Four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for winter driving
