Diamond Light Source is the UKs national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Engineering at Diamond enables our scientists to use synchrotron light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
At Diamond we are currently planning a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Project Engineer to join our team, developing state of the art facilities to deliver ground-breaking scientific research, and making a significant contribution to the Diamond-II upgrade.
Responsibilities will include:
Supporting and leading in the delivery of Diamond projects, interacting closely with in-house and external scientific and engineering staff.
Providing professional mechanical engineering support and management in carrying out projects related to the technical systems of the Diamond facility.
Delivering, creative, innovative and adaptive solutions to problems involved with the multi-disciplined engineering systems at Diamond, and providing professional input to the mechanical design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning phases.
Negotiating, agreeing, and writing technical specifications, producing and monitoring project management plans including Gantt charts, resource and procurement plans.
Producing layouts, room data sheets, designing concepts and calculations to predict design performance and where necessary perform or supervise CAD and FEA on critical areas.
You will play a critical role in working collaboratively with scientists, technicians and other engineers.
You will be educated to degree level in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or demonstrate equivalent experience.
Candidates should have substantial experience in the delivery of unique complex scientific equipment including developing specifications, concept designs, taking detailed designs through to manufacture, testing, installation and commissioning.
You will also demonstrate knowledge / experience of:
Designing systems that operate under challenging conditions such as Ultra High Vacuum and cryogenic temperatures.
Engineering drawings, 3D modelling systems and modern manufacturing methods including additive manufacturing techniques.
Risk assessments and the requirements of directives such as the Machinery Directive.
Managing all stages of a project including contract supervision and tendering.
Good communication skills are critical, including the ability to discuss ideas, present possible solutions, debate and collaborate at all stages of the projects.
