Your role and responsibilities:

As a quantum algorithms researcher, you will be a part of Xanadu’s software and algorithms group, working in collaboration with our team of scientists and software developers. Your main role will include discovering new quantum algorithms, implementing new functionalities in Xanadu’s software library PennyLane, inventing key intellectual property, and publishing scientific papers in prestigious journals. You will also work on problems of real-world impact in collaboration with our partners and customers.

The first focus of your work will be to develop quantum algorithms for tackling challenging computational problems, particularly related to the simulation of physical systems. The goal is to deeply understand how quantum computing can have the largest technological impact and to use these insights to guide Xanadu’s strategic roadmaps, customer relationships, and partnerships. The second focus area is to transform your quantum algorithm expertise into world-class software functionality that will continue to establish PennyLane as the industry-standard library for quantum computing.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in quantum computing, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong track record of research accomplishments in quantum algorithms, demonstrated by your peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
  • Deep understanding of fundamental quantum computing concepts such as quantum phase estimation, Hamiltonian simulation, quantum compilation, fault-tolerance, and variational quantum algorithms.
  • Very strong software development and scientific programming skills in Python, preferably with a proven track record of contributions to open-source scientific libraries.
  • Good grasp of basic concepts in quantum physics such as Hilbert spaces, solutions to Schrödinger’s equation, second quantization, time evolution, and the Heisenberg picture.
  • Experience with quantum software libraries, preferably PennyLane, Strawberry Fields, and OpenFermion.
  • Ability to conduct research in an interdisciplinary team environment, as well as independently when required.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to manage individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic proficiency in fundamental quantum chemistry concepts such as the Hartree-Fock method, fermion-to-qubit mappings, molecular Hamiltonians, wavefunction approaches to electronic structure calculations, and a killer ping pong serve.
