Job overview
The Pharmacy general manager role is a full time position accountable directly to the Chief Pharmacist. The post holder will be accountable in conjunction with the Chief pharmacist for cost effective patient care through the delivery of high quality pharmacy services within budget constraints. They will support implementation and management of systems and processes to ensure all pharmacy services are delivered in accordance with care group, site and trust objectives and policies. They will provide strong leadership to enable the service to respond effectively to the challenges it will face whilst providing efficient services and sustained improvements.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will also be responsible for the operational management of both the pharmacy admin and clerical staff and the Homecare pharmacy administrative team ensuring that national standards and governance arrangements are in place for all medicines supplied via this route. The post holder will also be directly responsible for overseeing and managing pharmacy contracts and service level agreements. This includes advising management and supervising the implementation of contracts for optimal efficiency and benefits. The post holder is expected to cross cover and work at all sites provided by the Trust where care group services are provided and will also be part of the care group site lead rosters.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Leadership & PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT
· As part of the care group management team to provide leadership to the care group staff, ensuring clear communication of Trust vision, priorities and expectations to ensure the engagement of teams to deliver services of the highest quality.
· Responsible for overseeing and managing pharmacy contracts and service level agreements e.g. domestic service provision such as cleaning and KFM outpatient pharmacy and porter contract. This includes advising management and supervising the implementation of contracts for optimal efficiency and benefits.
· Responsible for the operational management of the Homecare pharmacy administrative team ensuring that national standards and governance arrangements are in place for all medicines supplied via this route.
· Role model positive leadership behaviours by living the Trust’s values and visibly leading on promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the job role.
· Responsible for managing the complex nature of the business area, ensuring that the appropriate strategic plans are delivered within the relevant operating framework.
· In conjunction with the chief pharmacist develop and deliver the strategy and performance management of care group services.
· Responsible, with the chief pharmacist, for the development and delivery of capacity plans to ensure that the Trust achieves the NHS constitutional targets relevant to the care group.
· Exercising delegated authority on behalf of the chief pharmacist, the post holder will provide leadership to resolve day-to-day management issues within the care group.
· Holding care group management team members to account for delivery of their objectives through regular performance review meetings.
· Provide a professional, senior management contribution across the Care Group, working in partnership with the Head of Nursing and Clinical Director and others to deliver cost-efficient, high quality and responsive services.
· Ensuring sufficient data availability within the care group to monitor and track performance and to satisfy reporting requirements.
· Have a high-profile role in the development of the care group working with internal and external partners.
· Lead on and deliver a number of key care group strategic and operational programmes.
· Providing appropriate input and challenge to clinical and business plans where necessary.
· To deputise for the chief pharmacist or care group management team as required.
· Complete ad hoc tasks and projects at the request of the Chief Pharmacist or Deputy Chief Pharmacist Operations.
· Actively participate in, and co-ordinate, the pharmacy site lead rota.
Person specification
Education & Qualifications
- Master’s degree in pharmacy, healthcare or management
- First Degree and/or equivalent senior management experience
- Evidence of maintaining continuous professional development
- Prince 2 or other Project management experience
- Registered healthcare professional e.g. GPhC, AHP, RN etc
Experience
- Significant management experience in a senior role within the acute sector in particular operational management
- Experience of managing strategic and operational performance in achieving key targets
- Proven record of financial management at senior level, delivering on complex and large budgets including reducing costs, monitoring and determining corrective action.
- Successful delivery of cost improvement programmes
