Are you a seasoned Java expert who thrives on solving complex problems and mentoring talented developers? At Heywood, we're building the future of pension technology, and we need your expertise to help lead the way.
About you
- Experienced Java developer
- Advocate of Agile development and XP practices such as TDD
- Possess strong technical and interpersonal skills
- Enthusiastic coach with a desire to mentor and develop others
- Eager to participate, bring ideas and share your thoughts with your team and the wider business
- Proactive and inquisitive, willing to challenge the norm to help improve the way we work
The role
This is a hands-on role, combining Scrum team member, technical leadership, people management and coaching a team of developers.
As a key member of one of our Scrum teams you will define, build, and deploy new products and features that meet the needs of our expanding customer base. Heywood is a company that’s just right for the next stage in your career. Why? As a long-established and successful business, we can provide stability, support, and growth opportunities, all while being the right size for you to make a significant impact and be recognised and valued for your contributions. You’ll have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects and see the impact of your work in a dynamic and encouraging environment.
We are located in Altrincham, in a workspace that promotes collaboration and facilitates hybrid working with great tech, AV equipment, and flexible spaces.
First and foremost, you will be a strong and experienced Java developer, but we’re not just looking for great coders. We’re looking for problem solvers who are keen to share their ideas, challenge our approach and continuously improve the way we work. As a proactive and inquisitive developer, you'll be passionate about collaborating with and contributing to the professional growth of your team. You'll also be comfortable working with other specialists such as UX Designers, product experts, Test Analysts and, of course, our customers.
You'll be working on a modern JDK (we currently use Amazon Corretto 17) and with a variety of approaches such as pair programming, automated testing, and continuous integration - all backed by DevOps technologies such as Chef, Vagrant, Kubernetes, Terraform, Packer and Docker. Our culture encourages continuous improvement, so we’ll be looking to you to investigate new tech, frameworks, and processes, to help drive us forward.
As a Principal Developer you will be responsible for the growth of developers (e.g., regular 1-to-1 coaching sessions and objective setting); be a strong contributor to technological and business advancement; and encourage/support developer participation in community forums and sessions. You also help in growing our teams further through our recruitment campaigns and promotion process.
Our assessment process
Your application will be reviewed by our Principal Developers. If selected, you’ll be invited to an interview, where you will:
- Work on a Java coding task with one of our Developers.
- Discuss a piece of your code that you are proud of (please submit this in advance).
- Have a chat with two of our Principal Developers to learn more about you and for you to learn about us.
We aim to complete the entire process, from application to job offer, within two weeks. Apply now and let's build something amazing together!
