The MCH pediatric clinics provide acute tertiary and sub-specialty care to children age 0-17. These are dynamic, fast-paced clinics where care is provided to children in a family-centred environment. Position Summary The 3Y Pediatric Inpatient Surgical Care/Gastrointestinal Unit (3Y), is located at McMaster Children's Hospital Site of Hamilton Health Sciences. This inpatient unit provides acute tertiary and sub-specialty surgical care including pediatric trauma to children age 0-17. 3Y prides itself on a friendly and welcoming environment with an emphasis on the wellbeing and mentorship to all team members. The Occupational Therapist (OT) will apply their clinical expertise of pediatric disease processes and related complex medical and surgical conditions to provide comprehensive care and coordinate follow-up to children to maximize their occupational performance (feeding and swallowing, self-care, productivity and leisure) and recovery in order to facilitate discharge, community integration and functional adaptation. As a member of the multidisciplinary health care team, the OT liaises and communicates with team members including the facilitation and coordination of community services and supports. The OT will work with pediatric surgical, GI, and complex care populations and their families in the inpatient setting. This position will include cross coverage for other inpatient units within McMaster Children’s hospital as needed. Schedule Work Hours Rotating days, evenings and weekends This is a temporary position with an approximate end date of December 1, 2024 Qualifications Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
Graduate of an approved School of Occupational Therapy
Relevant experience, knowledge, and clinical skills in the provision of evidence-based occupational therapy practice in the management of infants, children, adolescents (and their families)
Minimum of three (3) years’ recent, relevant clinical experience in a tertiary pediatric setting
Demonstrated experience with assessment, evaluation and treatment with pediatric surgical patients
Experience with pediatric feeding and swallowing assessment and treatment preferred.
Well-developed knowledge of the role of occupational therapy services, and other disciplines along the continuum of care
Demonstrated knowledge of relevant community services and children’s treatment facilities
Demonstrated ability to multitask in a fast paced environment
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Self-directed and flexible practitioner with well-developed critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage a caseload of patients to ensure optimal patient care and access to service.
